Chimney Sweep in Brighton, Hastings and all Locations in the East and West Sussex Areas

The safety of you and your family is important to us. Chimney fires are a stark reminder of the risks associated with irregular maintenance. Because most insurers insist that you have your chimney cleaned at least once year, Swept Away Installations can offer you the services of a chimney sweep. In much the same way as we only use HETAS engineers for installations, so it is that our company only assigns a registered chimney sweep to work at your home.

It can cost between £45 and £75 to use a certificated chimney sweep.

Hal and his team cover all locations in East and West Sussex to include:

Battle – Bexhill-on-Sea – Brighton – Eastbourne – Hailsham – Hastings – Hove – Lewes – Newhaven – Ringmer – Saltdean – Seaford – St Leonards-on-Sea – Uckfield

It is our recommendation that you burn a hardwood in a multi-fuel or wood-burning stove instead of a softwood. Hardwood has a slower burn that is longer to make it more economical, and the fire itself will burn hotter. When using hardwood, you reduce creosote deposits in the chimney and lining.

This will assist in keeping your chimney and the flue cleaner for longer.

Maintenance, Repairs and Cleaning

To keep wood-burning stoves in a safe, operational condition, you should use a chimney sweep for annual maintenance. In addition to cleaning chimneys and flues, maintenance also includes the thorough cleaning of stoves, full inspections for faults and the replacement of fire ropes every 4 to 5 years based on the amount of usage. Chimney sweeps check the flue joints for any leaks and if repairs are needed, we recommend they are made immediately.

Cleaning of the stove includes:

  • Ash cleaned from stove body, internal grate, firebricks and baffle plate
  • Baffle plate inspected for condition and the flue swept
  • Soot checked for the correct consistency and burning procedure

If you burn wood incorrectly or use wet wood in a stove, a chimney sweep is likely to find flaky deposits in the flue instead of a fine soot. Should we find this to be the case, we will explain the most appropriate methods for burning fuel and, if all other checks indicate there is no additional maintenance needed, we then reinstall the internal stove components and clean the glass.

IF A FIRE ACTS DIFFERENTLY OR BURNS MORE SLOWLY THAN USUAL, THIS INDICATES A CHIMNEY BLOCKAGE AND MUST BE IMMEDIATELY DEALT WITH.

What can cause a chimney blockage?

Lighted fires and stoves draw heat and other gases from a room which rise up the chimney. As the heat and gases start cooling, soot and creosote, which is a flammable substance, build up on the walls and the flue liner. This build-up leads to blockages, inefficiency and the added risk of chimney fires.

Using a chimney sweep is beneficial and affords you total peace of mind.

How often should I have my chimney cleaned?

Book in to have your chimney swept annually if in regular use or after a longer period where it hasn’t been used at all. A chimney sweep might advise that you have your chimney cleaned before the heating season ends so that it is kept clear of nests and left in good condition for the idle summer period.

Chimneys used more often will need cleaning at more frequent intervals.

Why should I use a certificated chimney sweep?

A certificated and registered chimney sweep will be able to locate any issues related to inefficient burning and blockages easily, and they usually address them on the day of the initial visit. An experienced sweep checks a chimney from the ground and the firebox. We strongly recommend that you never try to access the roof yourself because of the associated dangers and fall risks.

The advice of a professional chimney sweep is built on experience and if you address repairs immediately, our services save you money over the long term.

Always be aware of the following:

  • Never use treated, painted or non-natural products as a fuel source
  • Always purchase a guard to use with your fireplace
  • Ensure that all stove installations are undertaken by HETAS engineers
