HETAS Engineer in Battle, Bexhill-on-Sea and all Sussex Areas | Benefit from a Safer Stove Installation

The Heating Equipment and Testing Approval Scheme (HETAS) governs the work of solid fuel, and wood biomass, appliance and system installations in England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands. Swept Away Installations has accredited HETAS engineers on its team who can install multi-fuel stoves and wood-burning stoves as competent persons to exacting standards that ensure safer workmanship and efficient appliance performance.

Consumers should always ask to see their installer’s HETAS ID card prior to the agreement of work and should only use HETAS engineers to give them sound technical guidance on multi-fuel and wood-burning stove installations.

Hal and his friendly team of stove installers cover the following locations:

Battle – Bexhill-on-Sea – Brighton – Eastbourne – Hailsham – Hastings – Hove – Lewes – Newhaven – Ringmer – Saltdean – Seaford – St Leonards-on-Sea – Uckfield – East Sussex – West Sussex

The benefits of choosing HETAS engineers include support from a trusted not-for-profit organisation that sets best practice benchmarks within our industry.

HETAS will:

  • Influence standards for installations and fuels with robust evidence
  • List appliances and fuels which mirror these standards
  • Approve training centres for installers working in our sector
  • Regularly update businesses, consumers and regulators with advice
  • Research potential service improvements within our sector
  • Register competent persons to HETAS who can meet set standards
  • Engage with local and national government to reduce sector impact

The scheme covers services offered by approved HETAS engineers, company installers, chimney sweeps and retailers who comply to expected standards.

Am I required to line a chimney?

The UK Building Regulations advise on when chimneys might need lining and on how to conduct checks. Instructions should indicate if an appliance is safe to use without a lining. If you plan to re-use a chimney or change the flue to one of a different type or rating, a HETAS engineer should perform a check as a competent person. There are three reasons to reline an existing chimney:

  1. Results of appropriate testing rate the chimney and lining as unsound
  2. The flue’s cross-section is too large for the appliance
  3. The existing chimney lining isn’t suitable for use with the appliance

Having a chimney relined or rebuilt requires specialist advice on the materials and systems an installer should use. Fire-resistant pre-cast liners should be of a sufficient size for the chimney opening and the proposed appliance.

Cast in-situ liners must be tested by a HETAS engineer and meet the required BS EN 1857:2003 and T400 N2 D 3 G standards

Double-skin flexible stainless steel linings can be used if there are access issues or if the chimney isn’t suitable for a different liner. Single-skin flexible liners are not suitable for use with gas fires or stoves which have the intended use of being solid fuel burning appliances under any circumstances whatsoever.

How can I find out if an appliance has HETAS approval?

You can find approved appliances in the Official Guide to HETAS Approved Products and Services or by using the search facility on the HETAS website.

How will I know if a fuel is suited to my appliance?

The operating instructions included with appliance purchases will list suitable fuels and the HETAS website also has a directory for approved fuels.

How often do I need to have a chimney swept?

Have chimneys and flues cleaned annually by a chimney sweep if you burn an authorised smokeless fuel, or twice annually by a chimney sweep if you use the appliance to burn wood or bituminous coal.

Where can I find further information about an appliance?

You can download advice sheets for your chosen appliance without charge from the HETAS website, which has a full range of documentation available.

Should my installer fit a CO2 alarm?

In accordance with the UK Building Regulations, and since 2010, your HETAS engineer must fit a CO2 alarm in the same room as the appliance.

What if I am unhappy with an installation?

You can download a complaints questionnaire from the HETAS website if you feel unhappy with the workmanship of a registered HETAS engineer.

Will my installation come with certification?

Yes. HETAS engineers have the authority to self-certificate installations stating that the finished work complies with the current UK Building Regulations.
